February Fire FAQ
What is February Fire?
February Fire is a local Richmond Virginia Cannabis Cup. We are focused on home grown, craft cannabis.
Where is February Fire?
February Fire primarily is happening online and at some local spots in RVA, on Reddit r/RVA_Homegrown with additional content on Instagram @FebruaryFireRVA. There will be multiple in person events, including Judging Workshops and our Awards Ceremony. All event dates and locations will be announced on our Instagram feed.
Which awards will be given out?
The actual prizes will be revealed at our Awards Ceremony in March (date tbd). We’ll be awarding the Best New Grower, Best Autoflower, Best Photoperiod, Best Indoor, Best Outdoor, Best Overall, Best Breeder, and People’s Choice.
Will flower entries get lab tested?
Every entry will get tested at a local lab for cannabinoids, terpenes, mycotoxins, and moisture content. While we won’t be scoring submissions based on the lab results, these results will be available for everyone to see on this website, and will be shared with each respective Contestant after Judging has taken place.
Flower samples that test positive (fail) for mycotoxins will not be available for sampling at the Awards Celebration.
Our Judge Panel receives training on identifying bud rot. Part of their evaluation instructions are to look for and note any mold, bugs, or other visible contaminants, and specifically not to consume any sample that they find mold in.
How will each entry be scored?
We’ll have a panel of trained local Judges who will evaluate each flower submission. They will be scoring on Appearance, Aroma, Flavor, and Experience. Judging will be blind (no judge will receive information about the flower they’re evaluating) and will take place over the entire month of January 2024, so each sample gets the individual time and attention it deserves.
The highest scoring entries in each category will enter a second round of head-to-head judging to determine the ultimate winners in each category.
How much flower needs to be submitted to enter?
Entries will be 28 grams of flower. For the New Grower category, entries will be no less than 14 grams. Entries must be grown by the Contestant. Please do not enter a friend’s grow, commercial flower, etc…
How many Contestants will there be?
Entry spots will be determined by the financial support of our local sponsors. We are hopeful that there will be 75 entry spots available. If sponsorship dollars allow, we will open up more spots.
Which deadlines should I be aware of?
November 4, Contestant entries go on sale here on the February Fire Website.
December 31, Contestants must have their flower submissions delivered by the end of the day, 12/31/2023.
How do I become a Judge?
Anyone over 21 is eligible to become a Judge. In order to become a Judge, you must attend one of our Judging Workshops, which will be happening in November and December 2024. These will be announced on r/RVA_homegrown and February Fire Instagram. We will select our Judges from Workshop participants.
What about Sponsorships?
Local businesses and influencers are encouraged to help us make February Fire as awesome as it can be. Our sponsorships for 2025 will become available in October 2024
Can Sponsors submit flower for the competition?
Yes! We’ll be judging blind, so Sponsors are welcome to submit their homegrown flower.
